Aged cells may contain 20-30% lower levels of glutathione than young cells. This may be due to toxic exposure from the environment including pollutants, medications, alcohol consumption, heavy metals or bacterial or viral infection. It is by far the most important detoxifier of the liver and the brain. Administration can prevent or reverse damage done to neuronal cells as well as preserves brain tissue by preventing damage from free radicals.
Glutathione has also been found to protect the liver from damage produced by alcohol consumption. This can help in prevention of “hangovers” or reduction of symptoms produced from poor detoxification mechanisms. Obviously doing your glutathione infusion prior to a wedding, big party or festival is much more beneficial than doing it after the fact but even post-party, glutathione can be helpful. It also is being utilized in addiction as it can make the brain more sensitive to a neurotransmitter called dopamine, the main neurotransmitter that is stimulated by addictive drugs, substances and behaviors.
Unfortunately, glutathione is not well absorbed orally. The way that we can get around this is by administering it intravenously. Of course, by administering the glutathione along with some of the nutrients involved in the same processes, such as Vitamin C, B vitamins and minerals, we can amplify the effects seen with glutathione alone. Doing treatments in this manner can also reduce the chances that you may experience a detox reaction which may include feelings of fatigue, malaise, headaches or nausea.
